3 AI Time Savers for Your Classroom

I’ve got 3 AI time savers for your classroom. The best part? You’re probably already using them. They’re all companies that have been around for years. They’ve simply harnessed the power of AI to make your life easier.

We’ve been discussing AI a lot lately, so I had to share this. I’ve got 3 AI time savers for your classroom. The best part? You’re probably already using them. They’re all companies that have been around for years. They’ve simply harnessed the power of AI to make your life easier.

3 AI Time Savers for Your Classroom: Edpuzzle

Here’s the first of 3 AI time savers for your classroom.

I’ve been using Edpuzzle for about a decade. As a history teacher, I’ve found it an effective teaching-tool.

Its premise is simple yet effective–find a video, tailor questions to it, and let students interact with the content in a meaningful way. In all honesty, I’ve avoided open-ended questions because…well..grading. The introduction of AI into Edpuzzle has been my saving grace.

Here’s how AI has enhanced Edpuzzle:

  1. AI-Generated Questions: With the new teacher assistant feature, you can now have AI generate questions based on the video content. This both saves time and ensures that questions are closely aligned with the video’s objectives.
  2. Autograding Open-Ended Questions: Perhaps the most groundbreaking feature is AI’s ability to autograde open-ended questions. This eliminates the grueling task of manually grading them. YAY.

I woke up sick two weeks ago and had to change my plans for a sub. This would normally be an ordeal of epic proportions, but it literally took two minutes to do it. I just followed these two steps:

3 AI Time Savers for Your Classroom: Quizlet

Here’s the second of 3 AI time savers for your classroom.

Good old Quizlet. I made my first set on that platform fourteen years ago. Quizlet’s long been synonymous with flashcards and study sets, but AI has taken it to a new level. Here are two remarkable features powered by AI:

  1. Document Analysis: By uploading a PDF or presentation, Quizlet’s AI can extract text to create an outline, notes, flashcards, and questions. This feature is incredibly useful for digesting complex materials, making it easier for students to study and retain information.

I did this with a dense PDF that was overwhelming to a group of students I was taking to Youth Assembly (a mock congress). It helped them learn the material and I spent all of one minute “creating” it. You do this simply by going to Quizlet and selecting generate. It prompts you to do the rest. You get to try a couple of free uploads before Quizlet starts asking you to pay.

  1. Q-Chat Tutor: The Q-Chat function acts as a personal tutor for students, guiding them through study materials and helping reinforce learning through interaction. This AI-powered feature adapts to the student’s pace and understanding, providing a personalized learning experience. This is part of the free version. All students do is select Q-Chat.
Select Generate and follow the prompts. One of them will be to upload a PDF. The AI walks you through everything.

Students can use Q-Chat as a personal tutor. All they need to do is select the option and the tutor begins its questioning.

The economics teacher at my school has students interact with the Q-Chat tutor weekly with their vocabulary and keep a digital log of screenshots of the process for accountability.

3 AI Time Savers for Your Classroom: Quizizz

Here’s the third of 3 AI time savers for your classroom. And this one may be my favorite.

Similar to Edpuzzle, Quizizz uses AI to streamline the creation of quizzes and lessons.

AI’s role in Quizizz:

  1. Content Integration: Like Edpuzzle, you can upload documents and insert YouTube links. But you can also insert weblinks and import from Google Slides or Docs. Quizizz uses AI to transform this content into interactive quizzes or lessons tailored to your needs.
  2. Autograding: AI’s ability to grade open-ended questions is a game-changer. It makes timely feedback consistently possible.
Simply select Create and Quizizz's AI will prompt you with multiple options and walk you through the steps.

The other day I forgot to make copies of a source analysis activity for my AP World History students. I realized my mistake while my students were working on their bellringer. Fortunately, I had a PDF of the activity. I loaded it into Quizizz and had the assignment ready to assign digitally by the time they finished their bellringer.

If I only had a paper copy, that would have been fine, too. I got an email from Quizizz last week that they’ve added an image AI generation feature. Now you can take a picture of a worksheet, load it into Quizizz, and have a digital lesson or quiz ready to go.

The Takeaway

All three of these tools have been around for years, but they’ve harnessed the power of AI to make our lives easier. There’s no need to hunt for a pre existing resource, only to spend additional time customizing it for your class. And then spending hours grading. Now you can have instant customization and feedback with the click of a mouse.

The 3 AI integrations have already been huge timesavers in my classroom. I hope you can use them to save time in your classroom, too!
